This concert, in remembrance of 'Kristallnacht' features two works: Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) and Boris Pigovat's The Holocaust Requiem.
‘Kristallnacht’ or Night of Broken Glass refers to 9 November 1938 when organised anti-Jewish riots began in Germany and Austria.
Ein Deutches Requiem is Johannes Brahms’ magnum opus which he described as a work for humanity. While Brahms never finished an opera, his requiem is at once his most theatrical piece and a stunningly symmetrical symphonic form. It is also a candid glimpse into its composer’s heart, writing, it is said, in response to the deaths of his mother and his close friend. Ein Deutches Requiem is a stunning work of high craftsmanship and is considered notable for unusual orchestration and four undividing choral parts.
